About Joy

Get to know me better!
the human being

Hi, I’m Joy!

As a child, I used to sit in my dad’s office and draw using highlight markers and paintbrush software on the computer. At home, I'd always be drawing, crafting handmade cards, and painting details around the place. Since I was very young, I knew art and design were going to be my thing - but at some point I lost track of it. It took me many years to recognize and accept my path as a multipassionate creative. Today I understand that each thing I do has a role to fulfill. Design is my vocation (and service), painting is my soul-calling and fusion bellydance is my hobby. In all ways, I view creativity as a Divine force for good and use it to spread joy.

The Designer

I believe in CO-CREATION: the process of collaborating to create something. It’s in co-creating that the most successful projects come to life. I view myself as a translator of that vision you have in mind - my role is to translate and add to it based on my years of experience, training and that "gut feeling" (aka Divine Creativity).

Formal Education
2021: User Experience Design | Diploma @ BrainStation (Canada)
2016: Architecture & Urbanism | Bachelor's degree @ Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (Brazil)
2014: Interior Design & Fine Arts | Visitor exchange student @ Kwantlen Polytechnic University (Canada)
Notable Experience
2023: Sandra Nomoto's book "Vegan Marketing Success Stories" cover design featured on TV (Global News, 2023)
2022: ZIMT Chocolates' special holidays packaging design sold nationwide in Canada at Chapters Indigo.
2018: Participation at IDS Vancouver with a booth design for Pravada Floors.

The Artist

For many years, I hid myself ashamed of being multipassionate - for loving many forms of artistic expression that didn't necessarily connect with my profession as a designer (or so I thought). It took me many years to know and own who I am. Now I'm unapologetically Multiple. I view myself as a channel for the Creator within. Painting is my soul-calling and bellydance is a hobby that could also be called 'therapy'. ;)

Snippets of a journey
Since childhood: Acrylic painting and drawing - intentionally developing since 2017.
Since 2007: Oriental dance "bellydance" and variations ("fusion bellydance") - intentionally developing since 2014.
Other Experiments/Seasons: Pottery, sculpture, embroidery, figure drawing, watercolour painting...

The Public Speaker

Public speaking is a way to give voice to what I believe is my purpose - to help multipassionate and repressed creatives embrace all of who they are. Public speaking has helped me find and shape my message thanks to many mentors whom I'm so grateful for. I believe that if more of us express ourselves, in whatever ways, there'll be more joy going around in the world - and happy people cause no harm!

Notable accomplishments
2023: Became a TEDx Speaker (TEDx Kerrisdale - Vancouver, BC).

“Joy's excellent design and layout skills were key, in producing the design plans and layout for the current Pravada floors website. Since she left Pravada with some of the most beautifully designed branding, we have continued using her templates and branding standards. I truly miss working collaboratively, playing off each others skills and learning from each other. Her patience and high level design skills are second to none!”

"I hired Joy in the spring of 2022 to design the cover for my book, Vegan Marketing Success Stories. [...] I can tell you working with her was an absolute DREAM — and I've worked with some great graphic & web designers in the past. [...] Joy not only presented 3 options for packages but came up with 3 mockups, outlined key deadlines, stayed in communication with me constantly, and provided 14(!) bonus graphics I could use for promotional purposes. When my first proof copy wasn't all that perfect, she encouraged me to wait until I got the next copy before taking photos—a testament to her care for quality. I am THRILLED with how my book cover turned out and having additional graphics support took one less thing off my plate. I'd hire Joy in a heartbeat again, especially if you want a pro who cares about your work just as much as you do."
